Deliverables

To-scale model with external and internal renders of watch.

SUMMARY

I disassembled a casino watch and created a 3D replica of its components to better understand how tolerances and assembly impact manufacturability. This hands-on project focused on measuring internal parts, modeling for fit, and aligning design choices with real-world production constraints. It served as a deep dive into DFMA fundamentals.

MODELING

Teardown & Analysis

Casio’s A16WA-1 watch was disassembled and measured to ensure accurate scaling. Select components were intentionally scaled up in size or thickness to enhance visibility and durability in the 3D-printed model, especially parts that were originally too thin to print without breaking.

PROCESS

Printed Components

Class A surfaces were printed with resin. Smaller parts were printed with PLA. These materials were selected for their ability to withstand the high temperatures generated during resin curing.

Sanding

Pieces with layer lines and supports were sanded.

Casting

Pieces were cast in resin. Resin was poured and allowed to sit, a piece of the watch was placed with tweezers, after some time the next layer of resin was poured. This process was repeated for several layers.

OUTCOME

Final Physical Model

Sundae.

Light that feels like a treat.

Recorded.

A microphone you wear like jewelry.
